What oil does a Toyota Sienna take, and how much?

Toyota's 2026 Sienna owner's manual calls for ILSAC GF-6B multigrade engine oil, SAE 0W-16, in the 2.5-liter A25A-FXS engine. A drain and refill takes about 4.5 qt. (4.3 L) with the oil filter, or 4.2 qt. (4.0 L) without it. Toyota calls these reference quantities, so finish by checking the dipstick. SAE 0W-20 may be used only if 0W-16 is not available, and must be replaced with 0W-16 at the next oil change.

Why the Sienna uses 0W-16

The 2026 Sienna manual says SAE 0W-16 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If 0W-16 is not available, SAE 0W-20 oil may be used, but the manual says it must be replaced with SAE 0W-16 at the next oil change.

The "0W" describes the oil's cold startability: oils with a lower value before the W allow easier starting of the engine in cold weather. The number after it describes the oil's viscosity at high temperature.

Toyota says Toyota Genuine Motor Oil is used in the vehicle, and to use Toyota approved Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent that satisfies the grade and viscosity listed. The manual adds that the API registered mark is added to some oil containers to help you select the oil you should use.

How often to change the oil

From the 2026 Sienna Warranty & Maintenance Guide:

Every 10,000 miles

The maintenance chart lists replacing the engine oil and oil filter at 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000 and 50,000 miles, and on through the charts.

Or 12 months

A chart footnote says to replace both the engine oil and the oil filter, even when the maintenance reminder does not appear, after 12 months have passed or when driven over 10,000 miles since the last oil change.

Dirt, dust and short cold trips

If the van is mainly driven on dirt or dusty roads, or on repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below freezing (32°F), the guide says to replace both every 5,000 miles or 6 months, even when the maintenance reminder does not appear.

From Toyota's 2026 Sienna Warranty & Maintenance Guide, read November 4, 2026. The guide also recommends scheduled maintenance every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first, and says to check the engine oil level once a month.

How to check the oil level on a Sienna

The owner's manual says to check the oil on the dipstick with the engine at operating temperature and turned off:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground. After warming up the engine and turning it off, wait about 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the bottom of the engine.
  2. Holding a rag under the end, pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean and reinsert it fully.
  3. Pull it out again, holding a rag under the end, and check whether the oil level is above the low level mark.
  4. If the level is below or near the low level mark, add oil of the same type already in the engine with a clean funnel, slowly, keeping the level between the low level mark and the refill upper limit mark, then install the oil filler cap by turning it clockwise.

The manual lists times when oil consumption may increase: when the engine is new, with low-quality oil or the wrong viscosity, at high engine speeds or with a heavy load, when towing, with frequent acceleration and deceleration, and with long idling or frequent heavy traffic. It also says repeated driving without the engine warmed up, such as short distances, low speeds or low outside temperatures, can raise the oil level; that is not a malfunction, but if the level exceeds the refill upper limit mark, contact your Toyota dealer.

Oil maintenance reminders, the low oil level message and the low oil pressure light

The 2026 Sienna's meter shows the distance until the next engine oil change. "Oil Maintenance Required Soon" means the engine oil should be scheduled to be changed; "Oil Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer" means it should be changed. After changing the engine oil, the manual says to reset the engine oil maintenance data through "Oil Maintenance" on the multi-information display.

"Engine Oil Level Low Add or Replace" means the oil level may be low: check it and add oil if necessary. The manual notes it can appear when the vehicle is stopped on a slope, so move to a level surface and check whether it clears.

The low engine oil pressure warning light, with a buzzer, means the engine oil pressure is too low. The manual says to immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer.

Toyota Sienna oil FAQ

What oil does a 2026 Toyota Sienna take?

Toyota's 2026 Sienna owner's manual (OM08082U) calls for ILSAC GF-6B multigrade engine oil with a recommended viscosity of SAE 0W-16, using Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent that meets that grade and viscosity. If 0W-16 is not available, SAE 0W-20 may be used, but it must be replaced with 0W-16 at the next oil change.

How much oil does a 2026 Sienna hold?

The manual lists 4.5 qt. (4.3 L) with the oil filter and 4.2 qt. (4.0 L) without it, for a drain and refill. Toyota calls these reference quantities: when you add oil, keep the level between the low level mark and the refill upper limit mark on the dipstick. From the low level mark to the refill upper limit mark is 1.6 qt. (1.5 L).

Which engine is in the 2026 Sienna?

The manual lists a 2.5 L 4-cylinder gas engine (A25A-FXS), working with the hybrid system's electric motors.

How often should Sienna oil be changed?

The 2026 Sienna Warranty & Maintenance Guide lists engine oil and oil filter replacement at 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000 and 50,000 miles in its maintenance chart. A footnote says to replace both even when the maintenance reminder does not appear after 12 months have passed, or when driven over 10,000 miles since the last oil change. If the van is mainly driven on dirt or dusty roads, or on repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below freezing, the guide says to replace both every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

Can I use 0W-20 in a Sienna?

Only as a stand-in. The 2026 Sienna manual says SAE 0W-16 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather, and that if 0W-16 is not available, SAE 0W-20 may be used, but it must be replaced with SAE 0W-16 at the next oil change.

How do I reset the oil maintenance reminder on a Sienna?

The manual says the engine oil maintenance data should be reset after changing the engine oil. On the multi-information display, select "Oil Maintenance" with the meter control switches, then select "Yes" and press OK. The exact menu steps differ between the 7-inch and 12.3-inch displays.

Can Toyota of Fox Lake change the oil in my Sienna?

Yes. Our service team in Fox Lake can change the oil and filter with oil that meets the grade and viscosity in your owner's manual and reset the oil maintenance reminder. See the service hours above or schedule online.
