Toyota Sequoia MPG by Grade: 2026 and 2027

Every Sequoia uses the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, so its fuel economy comes down to one choice: 4x2 or 4x4. For 2027, toyota.com lists the Sequoia with 4x4 only. Here are the ratings for each grade and model year, the EPA records behind them, a rough range per tank, and the government's advice on why mileage drops in a northern Illinois winter. Figures are from toyota.com and fueleconomy.gov, read November 3, 2026.

Miles per gallon. From fueleconomy.gov (U.S. EPA and Department of Energy) records for the 2026 Toyota Sequoia, all 3.4L turbocharged V6 hybrids with a 10-speed automatic, read November 3, 2026. The EPA groups versions by drive rather than by Toyota grade name, and lists one regular-fuel and one premium-fuel record for each drive with the same mpg ratings. On November 3, 2026, fueleconomy.gov listed no 2027 Sequoia.

One hybrid powertrain, two drive systems

Toyota.com lists the i-FORCE MAX 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid on every 2026 and 2027 Sequoia grade, rated at 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, with a 10-speed automatic transmission and an engine Stop and Start system.

The hybrid side is a parallel system: toyota.com lists an electric motor of 48 hp and 184 lb-ft and a 288-volt hybrid battery with 1.87 kWh capacity.

For 2026, toyota.com lists 4x2 versions with rear-wheel drive and an automatic limited-slip differential, and 4x4 versions with 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case. The TRD Pro adds an electronically controlled locking rear differential. For 2027, toyota.com lists 4WDemand part-time 4WD as standard on all six grades and no rear-wheel-drive version.

Because the powertrain is the same on every grade, the 2 mpg gap between 4x2 and 4x4 is the main fuel-economy choice on a 2026 Sequoia. On a 2027, every grade carries the same 19 / 22 / 20 rating.

How far can a Sequoia go on a tank?

Toyota.com lists a 22.5-gallon fuel tank on every 2026 and 2027 Sequoia grade. Multiplied by the combined ratings, that gives a rough range of about 495 miles for a 2026 4x2 Sequoia at 22 mpg (22.5 x 22) and about 450 miles for any 4x4 at 20 mpg (22.5 x 20), which includes every 2027 grade.

That is our arithmetic from the published ratings, not a range figure from Toyota or the EPA. Towing, a full load of passengers, speed, temperature and terrain all change real-world range.

Why your Sequoia's MPG drops in winter

Fueleconomy.gov says conventional gasoline vehicles can expect a 10% to 20% fuel economy loss in city driving and 15% to 33% on short trips in cold weather, and hybrids typically 20% to 40% in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips. Its reasons:

Cold fluids

Cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids increase friction in the engine and transmission.

Longer warm-up

The engine takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature, which hurts short trips most.

Heat and defrost

Heated seats, window defrosters and heater fans use extra power.

Tires and air

Tire pressure drops in the cold, and denser cold air adds drag at highway speeds.

Winter gasoline

Winter blends can have slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends.

Battery

Battery performance falls in the cold, which on hybrids also affects regenerative braking.

From fueleconomy.gov's Fuel Economy in Cold Weather page, read November 3, 2026.

Getting closer to the rated numbers

Fueleconomy.gov's cold-weather advice: park in a warmer place such as a garage, combine trips so you drive less often with a cold engine, keep warm-up idling short (it notes most manufacturers recommend driving off gently after about 30 seconds), use seat warmers and defrosters only as needed, check tire pressure regularly, use the oil your manufacturer recommends for cold weather, and remove roof racks when you are not using them.

Year-round, it says aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, that mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph, and that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce mpg by about 1%.

Toyota Sequoia MPG FAQ

What MPG does the Toyota Sequoia get?

Toyota.com rates the 2026 Sequoia at 21 mpg city / 24 highway / 22 combined with 4x2 (rear-wheel drive) and 19 / 22 / 20 with 4x4. The 2027 Sequoia is listed with 4x4 only, at 19 / 22 / 20 on all six grades. Every Sequoia uses the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, so the drivetrain is what changes the rating.

Which Sequoia gets the best gas mileage?

The 2026 4x2 (rear-wheel drive) SR5 and Limited, at 21 mpg city, 24 highway and 22 combined on toyota.com. They are the only 4x2 versions toyota.com lists for 2026; for 2027 it lists no 4x2 Sequoia, and every 2027 grade is rated 19 / 22 / 20.

Is every Sequoia a hybrid?

Yes. Toyota.com lists the i-FORCE MAX 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid, rated at 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, as the powertrain on every 2026 and 2027 Sequoia grade.

How much MPG does 4x4 cost on a Sequoia?

On toyota.com, 4x2 versions are rated 21 / 24 / 22 and 4x4 versions 19 / 22 / 20: 2 mpg less in city, highway and combined driving. The EPA records for the 2026 Sequoia 2WD and 4WD show the same figures.

How far can a Sequoia go on a tank?

Toyota.com lists a 22.5-gallon fuel tank on every 2026 and 2027 Sequoia grade. At the combined ratings, that works out to roughly 495 miles at 22 mpg (22.5 x 22) and 450 miles at 20 mpg (22.5 x 20). This is simple math from the ratings, not a Toyota or EPA range figure.

Does the Sequoia need premium gas?

Fueleconomy.gov lists two records each for the 2026 Sequoia 2WD and 4WD with identical mpg ratings: one names regular gasoline and the other premium gasoline. The owner's manual and fuel-door label of a specific Sequoia give its fuel requirement.

What are the 2027 Sequoia MPG ratings?

Toyota.com's 2027 Sequoia specifications page, read November 3, 2026, rates the SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, 1794 Edition and Capstone at 19 mpg city / 22 highway / 20 combined, all with 4x4. On the same day, fueleconomy.gov listed no 2027 Sequoia, so the EPA records on this page are for the 2026 model. Check the window sticker of a specific 2027 Sequoia for its EPA figures.

Why is my Sequoia's MPG lower in winter?

Fueleconomy.gov says hybrids typically lose 20% to 40% of their fuel economy in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips in cold weather, because of colder fluids, longer warm-ups, cabin heating, lower tire pressure, winter gasoline blends and reduced battery performance.
